Goro Goro Shot Breakdown

Layout by Rara Christa

Goro Goro with its anime-inspired visuals and punchy action took some crafty camera work to achieve! I used a

variety of cheats to take these

from layout to final animation.

For the first shot, the camera was positioned so close to Daigoro's body that he had to be carefully maneuvered to avoid clipping into the camera, while keeping his movement as dynamic as possible with his stubby body. This included clipping his legs into his stomach, fine tuning each frame as he stomps off, and using the rig's squash and stretch tools to create smears. Everything is being animated according to the camera.

Because Daigoro is traveling such a long distance in the second shot and only his upper body is seen, it was more practical to set his legs in FK for the entire shot and not animate them until necessary, which also made the transition to his spinning pose more smooth. His arms are translated out of place to create a dynamic running pose, and the beads of his necklace are allowed to pop in front of or behind his body to help the movement read better.

Another smear frame was created by scaling and translating the controls while maintaining appealing deformations. After the shot was lit and rendered, 2D effects and motion blur were added in compositing to really make the shot pop!
